Facebook CEO Zukerberg richer than Google founders

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has beaten Google founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, once again. And no, we are not talking about the success of the trio's social networking ventures. Zuckerberg is now richer than the Google duo.

With an estimated fortune of $17.5 billion, Zuckerberg breaks into the ranks of the richest 20 Americans for the first time -- coming in at No. 14 on the 2011 Forbes 400.

Last year, Zuckerberg surpassed Apple's Steve Jobs, courtesy Facebook's mighty valuation. This year with his paper fortune of $17.5 billion, he races past Google's Brin and Larry (at $16.7 each).

The other tech czars Zuckerberg leaves behind are Dell founder Michael Dell ($15 billion) and Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer ($13.9 billion).

Zuckerberg, who is at No. 14 on the list, jumped 21 positions from last year. Page and Brin sharing space at No. 15 on the list saw their net worth jump from $15 billion last year.

Connecting your Mobile to Pc for internet access on your subscribed gprs plan.

Hi friends! I am Yash Lodha. I am here to solve the difficulties you face regarding connecting your mobile phone to PC for accessing internet for free. Follow the steps.
Note:Internet cannot be accessed using china mobile because they dont give the modem option. In case if your china cell gives options like use as modem then you are lucky you can go ahead.

1) Please Please install the software or pc suite you get along with your Cell phone ( most probably you get it when you purchase samsung nokia or sony erricson phones)

(optional step):take the handset in your palm. go to setting menu >> select connectivity >> pc connection >> pc suite/ modem . (there are different menus with regard to different cell phones you can find connectivity menu by reading the user manual.

2)connect your cellphone via USB cable to your PC. Make sure you get a popup on the taskbar (where clock is shown) that USB device is connected. wait 1-2 mins while it setup your phone for the very first time. after that it should show modem found.

3)Now in your pc go to control panel >> Network connection >> create a new connection (probably on left side panel called "Network Task")

A dialogue box will appear for the setup click next >> connect to Internet >> setup connection manually >> connect using dial up modem

After that it will ask for ISP name. You can enter your mobile service provider or any name.

4) enter the phone number *99***1# Now everything had done. just go on clicking next. Leave all the fields like username password blank. add a shortcut to desktop.

But it will not connect directly again you have to do more setup.

5)go to start >> right click on my computer >> properties >> Click the hardware tab >> Device manager >> a window will open of title "Device manager" >> expand the modem option. >> select your phone modem right click >> properties >> Advance tab >> extra initial commands >>
type there the following:
+cgdcont=1,"IP","your APN"

Example if you are using Airtel sim:
+cgdcont=1,"IP","airtelgprs.com" Now press OK button. And this is how the setup is completed.

6)simply double click the "connect to "icon. and press dial.
Now you are ready to access inter net on your pc. Thank You.

Govt can switch off internet in emergencies

KOLKATA/NEW DELHI: The Indian government has armed itself with powers to 'switch off' or kill the internet during times of national emergencies, becoming one of the first few countries to assume such far reaching authority.

Even as the US and other western nations debate the judiciousness of giving the government's complete control to shut down cyber traffic, India has moved a step ahead and incorporated a provision under the IT Act of 2008, giving the Central government, or any of its officers specially authorised by it, to block the internet if necessary.

The shutdown can happen in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, its defense, security of its states, friendly relations with foreign states or for public order. Failure to comply will result in imprisonment of up to seven years.

The implications of this move are immense as it gives the government overriding powers over a fast-growing and widely used resource, and one that is becoming increasingly crucial in conducting commerce and social interaction.

The country has about 70 million internet users, a figure growing at about 25 per cent every year. "Where the Central government or any of its officer specially authorised by it in this behalf is satisfied that it is necessary or expedient so to do in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state, friendly relations with foreign states or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognisable offence relating to above, it may subject to the provisions of sub-sections (2) for reasons to be recorded in writing, by order direct any agency of the government or intermediary to block access by the public or cause to be blocked for access by public any information generated, transmitted, received, stored or hosted in any computer resource," 69A of the Information Technology Amendment Act, 2008 says.

The amendment was pushed through in the weeks following the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. Supporters of an internet 'kill switch', as it is being popularly called, say it will enable countries to prevent the spread of rumours and false information during times of national crisis and help coordinate a coherent response without any sign of public panic.

But it can also be misused by governments to shut down legitimate protests and exercise illegal power in the face of public opposition. The governments in the North Africa and the Middle East have been resorting to this tactic during the violent protests triggered in January this year against despotic rule.

The plan has drawn predictable ire from bloggers, activists and lawyers but the government also has its supporters. "If it's in national security's interest, switching off the internet for a short period is not unwelcome," says Amrita Chaudhary, director at Cyber Cafe Association of India. "It is not a bad idea to switch off the internet for security reasons. But we should distinguish between national security and privacy," Naresh Ajwani, secretary at Internet Service Providers of India, said.

Not satisfied with this provision, India is now moving ahead to develop alternate plans in case the 'switch' does not work. The draft plan by the Cabinet Committee on Security and Ministry of Home Affairs along with Ministry of IT & Communications to 'choke' the internet at will, which ET reported last year, is also learnt to be in its final stages.

Choking refers to handicapping the servers by subjecting it to multiple requests and attacks and preventing it from functioning effectively. Some experts believe that this may be easy to implement than a complete kill as the latter will be challenged in courts.

"Although it may be technically possible to block the Net in India, theoretically it may be very difficult given the dynamic nature of the constitution and the judiciary," cyber law expert Pavan Duggal said. If the government decides to block the internet, it may be challenged in any Indian court and would be subject to judicial review

Japan: Indian IT cos action plan

Bangalore: Amid fears of a nuclear catastrophe in Japan, domestic technology firms that have a presence in the country have begun to evacuate employees. While TCS has already started the process of relocation, Infosys and HCL have given its employees the option of returning to India . Cognizant, on the other hand, is giving its employees the option of moving to client locations within Japan or perhaps even to China or India.

India's largest IT company Tata Consultancy Services, which has already initiated the process of relocation, has over 200 employees in Japan. Of this more than half are Indians. "The safety of our employees is our top priority. We are ready to relocate our Indian employees and their families back to India as well as move our local Japanese employees and their families to other locations of safety," a company official said.

Infosys has 500 employees in Japan, of which 367 are Indians. "We have given them the option to come back and return again when things get better. Some people have already requested for relocation and they are in transit," said S D Shibulal, COO of Infosys. Cognizant Technology Solutions on the other hand is in consultation with its clients to move some of its employees to client locations in Osaka and moving other employees to India and China to support clients in the Japanese time zone. "As for the family members, we have given our associates the option to relocate them to India and China , as the case may be," a Cognizant spokesman said.

MindTree, meanwhile, is still monitoring the situation. "A war room has been set up under the leadership of the global head of the people function. We initiated the process of evacuation of families of employees yesterday (Monday). Today, we asked the employees also to return," Krishnakumar Natarajan, MD of MindTree said. The company has 20 Indians working in the country supporting five top Tokyo-based clients.

Though HCL has not asked employees to return, CEO Vineet Nayar said any employee who feels unsafe has the option to go to a "safe harbour" with his family. "We are in close contact with the Indian embassy in Japan, Indian nuclear agencies and Japanese nuclear agencies. They have informed us there is no cause for panic and safety standards are high," he said. HCL has 400 employees in Japan, of which 200 are Indians.

Smaller firms like Network Systems and Technologies (NeST) and IBS Software Services that have about 100 employees between them in Japan, are also bringing back their employees.

Wipro, however, has taken a different stand on the issue. The company's CEO TK Kurien said Wipro has 400 employees in Japan, of which 115 are Indians "and we treat all of them alike as everyone is facing the same situation." He said calling back Indians alone would not be a fair proposition. "In fact, we believe that it is fundamentally wrong. We also believe that it is important to show solidarity in times of need, cutting cultural and geographic boundaries," Kurien said.

Japan contributes about 2% of the total revenues for IT firms on an average.

Facebook gets a revamp

The world's largest social media website Facebook has rolled out a page redesign. The networking giant has removed tabs, and given page administrators the ability to post and comment on other Facebook Pages through a "Login as Page" feature. Here's an overview of the revamp:

* Links for the tabs have been moved over to the spot under the profile picture, and are now just links.

* Administrators can now comment as their page on other pages or other people's profiles. Users can no also receive email notifications about user comments on their Page, something previously only possible for comments on personal wall.

* Another addition is the new ability to "like" other Pages as your page. Previously, a user could only "like" something as an individual.

The new pages can be previewed and manually activated by page administrators over the next few weeks. Come March 1, and all pages will be automatically switched to the new design.

Google accuses Bing of copying search results

New York: Google has weathered criticism in the past that it has copied some features of Microsoft's Bing search engine, like background images. Now it has turned the tables, alleging that Bing copies something much more important: search results.

Danny Sullivan, head of the blog Search Engine Land, wrote Tuesday about "a sting operation" by Google that the company says proves that Bing watches Google's search results to improve its own.

Google says it suspects Microsoft is doing this by using Internet Explorer 8 and the Bing toolbar, both of which send user data to Microsoft, to watch how people use Google. In a company blog post, Microsoft did not deny that. But Harry Shum, corporate vice president of Bing, called Google's sting "a spy-novelesque stunt" and "a creative tactic by a competitor."

Google grew suspicious when it noticed a few odd things about Bing's search results, such as surprising similarities between the top results in the two search engines -- including results that Google considered to be mistakes, Amit Singhal, who oversees Google's search ranking algorithm, wrote in a company blog post.So Google went into detective mode.

It invented about 100 gibberish search queries, like "hiybbprqag," and matched them with results that had nothing to do with the query, like a theater seating chart. Mr. Singhal likened these queries to "the search engine equivalent of marked bills in a bank."

Then it asked 20 of its engineers to install Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 with the Bing toolbar, search for the rigged words and click on the made-up results. Sure enough, Bing soon started pointing people to the nonsensical search results for seven to nine of the 100 queries.

The result? "Some Bing results increasingly look like an incomplete, stale version of Google results -- a cheap imitation," Mr. Singhal wrote.

Mr. Sullivan, a long-time search industry analyst, came to the same conclusion. "It strongly suggests that Bing was copying Google's results, by watching what some people do at Google via Internet Explorer," he wrote in his comprehensive piece.

Mr. Shum wrote that Bing uses more than 1,000 signals to determine search results -- including "clickstream data we get from some of our customers, who opt in to sharing anonymous data as they navigate the Web in order to help us improve the experience for all users." Translation: Bing watches what people click when they visit Google and other sites.

The tussle is the latest in an ongoing battle between Google and Microsoft on many fronts. In search, Google has prided itself most on the relevance of its search results -- which no doubt contributes to its 67 percent search market share. So it is particularly sensitive for Google that Bing, in some cases, mimics its top results.

Mr. Sullivan wryly noted that when Bing started in 2009, people joked that it stood for "Because It's Not Google," and wrote that now it may as well stand for "Bing Is Now Google."

Internet will run out of IP addresses by Friday

London: The internet will run out of numerical IP (Internet Protocol) addresses by Friday. But the web will not ground to a halt. A new system, Internet Protocol version 6 or IPv6 will replace version 4.

Every device connected to the net is assigned a number. But with millions of web enabled phones now online, the numbers are running out.

The system, set up in the 1980s with a maximum of 4.1 billion addresses, was supposed to never run out. The original creators of the web initially thought it would be used only for academic purposes.

IP addresses act as phone numbers to ensure that surfers reach websites and e-mails and find their destination, the Daily Mail reports.

The authority that governs such addresses will distribute the last batches Thursday.

"It will just be 'business as usual' if everyone gets their job done," said John Curran, chief executive of the American Registry for Internet Numbers, one of five regional groups that dole out such addresses. They cover the US, Canada and the Caribbean

Clean Up Windows and Your Hard Drive

If you have a PC, chances are it runs too slowly for your tastes. Over time, your computer slows down due to all the virtual junk that accumulates in there.

It doesn't have to be that way. With the help of free and low-cost downloads, you can turn your sluggish system back into the youthful, zippy machine it once was. Read on to find out how.

Hands down, the single download with the most comprehensive set of tools for cleaning a PC and making it run faster is CCleaner, which gives your system a thorough scrubbing and makes it like new. For starters, it gets rid of all the unnecessary files that programs, browsers, and Windows itself leave behind; it'll eliminate .tmp files, cache files, file fragments, history lists, and more, including detritus from apps such as the major Web browsers, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Flash Player.

If that's all it did, this program would already be a must-have--but it can do more, as well. You'll find a very good Registry cleaner for zapping outdated Registry files (see the Registry section below for more on that topic), plus a tool for deleting Internet cookies you don't want while leaving behind the ones you wish to keep. And if you don't want to use the Windows uninstaller, CCleaner has a built-in uninstaller, too. Sound overwhelming? No worries: CCleaner lets you select the tasks it should perform. For example, you can tell it to erase traces that Chrome and Firefox leave behind, but not to clean up after Adobe Flash Player or Windows Media Player.

Just as remarkable, you don't have to pay a pretty penny for this program--it's donationware. You can pay what it's worth to you, from zero dollars on up.

Another useful freebie is 360Amigo System Speedup Free, which cleans the Registry, removes junk files, and defragments your hard disk. It's not as comprehensive as CCleaner, and it tends to overreport problems, but it's still worth a look.
Sweep Away Gunk
The very first time you start up a new PC, you might expect it to be free of gunk and unnecessary software, such as trialware. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Even on a PC's maiden voyage, you'll typically find it loaded down with "craplets"--unwanted demos, trialware, and the like that the software makers have paid the PC manufacturer to install. These craplets junk up your hard disk, and can slow down its performance.

What to do? Download and run the free PC Decrapifier. It seeks out and removes dozens of craplets to help make your PC a smooth-running machine. It won't clean out every piece of unneeded software; instead it looks for a list of known craplets, demos, and trialware. Regardless, even if you have an older PC, this tool is worth using, because that unneeded software may still be hiding on your computer.
One cause of many system slowdowns is the Windows Registry, which contains information about all your installed software, your preferences, how Windows should run, and more. Over time, as you install and uninstall software, change your preferences, and so on, the Registry fills with outdated entries, incorrect entries, and entries that conflict with one another. The likely result? Your system slows down and becomes more susceptible to crashing.

Note, however, that the benefits of cleaning the Registry are the focus of much debate. In some cases, Registry edits may help an ailing PC; in others, they may create problems. Before diving in, read "Are Registry Cleaners Worth It?" for some analysis.

If you want to try Registry cleanup, look to Advanced Registry Optimizer 2010, which finds problems and fixes them for you. You can have it do all the cleanup automatically, or tell it which items to clean and which entries to ignore.

The software gives you greater control over Registry cleaning than does CCleaner, but you'll be able to fix only 100 entries with it unless you pay the $30 fee to buy it. If you are confident about making sweeping changes to the Registry, get this program; otherwise, CCleaner will do fine for you.

Be aware, too, that you should always create a Windows system restore point before using Advanced Registry Optimizer 2010--or any Registry cleaner--in case it makes changes that cause your PC
Remove Duplicate Files
Lurking on your hard disk are plenty of duplicate files that take up space for no reason. If they're media files such as music or photographs, they could be consuming hundreds of megabytes of storage. Finding them all can be tough because identical files may have different names, and even files with the same name may be sitting in different directories.

The $20 DupeRazor Duplicate Files Removal Kit searches out duplicate files, tells you when it finds them, and then lets you delete them. It works lightning fast, zipping through several thousand files in minutes.

Be aware that it does make mistakes sometimes, so be sure to use its built-in ability to launch files to examine them before deleting them. If you'd rather not vet the possible duplicates so closely, you might prefer the more accurate (and, at $30, more expensive) Easy Duplicate Finder.

Defragment Your Hard Drive (but Not Your SSD)
Here's one more reason your PC might be sluggish: The hard disk may be fragmented. Windows stores files in pieces, and as you open and save them, those pieces go to various parts of the hard disk, leading to fragmentation. When you open the files, your PC needs to work harder to find them across the many different pieces. Fragmentation is a bigger problem for older PCs, but even new systems reap a benefit from defragging: If you happen to lose any files, defragged data will be easier to recover. (Solid-state drives, however, don't need frequent defragging; for more information, see "Defragging: Why, How, and Whether.")

You can solve the problem with the free Auslogics Disk Defrag, which finds fragmented files and then stores all the pieces in each file contiguously so that they open faster. You get a lot of control over how to defragment your hard drive, including setting a defragmentation schedule and determining what priority Auslogics Disk Defrag should get if it works while other programs are running. You can even move system files to the beginning of the hard disk, which may help performance.

Make Your PC Boot Faster
PCs seem to take an eternity to boot. That's because many programs set themselves to run automatically at startup even if they're not needed, which makes your PC chug along at boot time while you twiddle your thumbs. And once your PC boots, it runs more slowly since too many unnecessary programs are loaded.

The free Soluto does an excellent job of correcting matters. Soluto runs in the background and examines what applications and services load during startup. Then it analyzes them, and--using data from other Soluto users--it groups them into programs that need to run at boot, programs that don't have to run at boot, and programs that might be required at boot. You then make the decision about which ones should load.

The result? A faster-booting PC--and possibly a speedier PC overall.

Why Facebook eats most of your time

LONDON: If you think that Facebook eats up most of your time, then it's only going to get worse, suggests a new study.

Researchers at City University of Hong Kong have suggested that users become more active in online social networks as they grow bigger, reports New Scientist.

The researchers considered behaviour in two online networks: the Chinese blogging site Sina and a peer-to-peer file-sharing system called Tianwang.

By comparing the growth of these networks with user activity, they managed to settle a long-standing argument. There are two competing schools of thought when it comes to the growth of online social networks. One suggests that networks grow in a linear fashion: in other words, the activity of each user doesn't change much and so network activity grows in proportion with the number of users.

However, the second theory suggests that network growth is non-linear: as a network grows in size, users also use it more, causing total network activity to increase far more quickly than the linear model would predict.

The study results support the non-linear hypothesis, as the researchers observed that both blogging and peer-to-peer file-sharing sites see users becoming far more active on the networks the larger they get.

In the case of the peer-to-peer network, the team found that if the number of users doubled, their activity rose by a factor of 3.16. They also discovered that the bigger the inequality in activity between users, the quicker the network would grow.

"It makes sense that the total activity in a social system would be non-linear, because in a social system, the more people there are, the more things there are to do," said Mike Thelwall, of the University of Wolverhampton, UK.

"This would probably transfer to Facebook and Twitter, too. You might start to rely on Facebook or Twitter if a high proportion of your friends were on them," said Thelwall.

The team has also found that the increased activity follows a pattern known as a time-invariant power law-one of the upshots of which is that all users tend to become more active in the network. So there's no point deluding yourself: Facebook definitely is sucking up more of your time than ever before.

How to increase Internet speed?

There is no specific software for this purpose, as the Internet speed depends on the deal you have with your Internet service provider ( ISP). However, you can optimise your computer and browser for better speeds.

For example, if you are using an older version of Internet Explorer, you can upgrade to the latest IE9, Opera, Firefox or Chrome browsers for an instant speed boost.

These browsers render pages faster and hence make better use of your existing internet speeds. You can also install certain extensions like AD Blockers with Firefox and Chrome, which effectively block out unwanted pop-up and banner ads on certain websites — this will ensure that those pages load faster as well.

Finally, certain extensions like FasterFox (on Firefox) and FastestChrome (on Chrome) can make some automatic adjustments to boost speed.

FB.com costs Facebook $8.5 million

In the 21st Century, Shakespeare might ask, "What's in a domain name?" To the 6 million-member American Farm Bureau Federation, the answer is a lot of money.

Facebook paid $8.5 million to acquire the Internet address 'fb.com' for internal use by its employees from the largest US farm group.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the purchase on November 15, when Facebook unveiled its new messaging service. But he didn't reveal the pricetag.

"The Farm Bureau agreed to sell us fb.com and we in return have agreed not to sell farm subsidies," Zuckerberg said in an account on techcrunch.com.

At their annual meeting in Atlanta, Farm Bureau officials on Tuesday said the organization earned $8.5 million by selling a couple of domain names but is barred from identifying the buyer. The farm group uses fb.org as its Internet address but may own four dozen domain names related to farming.

An App To Calculate Autorickshaw Fare

It happens all the time that you hire an auto rickshaw, reach your destination and spend a lot of time arguing over the total fare. The driver might trick you with wait time charges, extra night charges or new fare charts and the like, but you still will not part with your 'hard-earned money' easily. A Bengaluru-based start-up has sensed this common problem and used technology to get rid of it.

'Tuk-Tuk', an application developed by MindHelix Technologies, can calculate the due fare using Global Position Technology (GPS) and help you prevent getting robbed. It runs on Android, Blackberry and Symbian devices and is freely downloadable from www.tuktuk.mindhelix.com.

The best part is that it does not require Internet or a service provider's network to function. So it can be used in a remote or a rural area too. The interface also isn't too complex to operate as it only requires you to start and stop the application. If you're in a different city, you can also key in the fare per kilometre and save yourself from getting cheated.

Scanner + Evernote To Make The Paperless Office

In this day and age of high-tech, the notion that our offices and businesses still need to rely on paper as much as they do is just wrong.
Whether you want to use the environmentalist argument, or just the one about clutter – the reasons for going paperless are many. For me, it has more to do with the overhead and annoyance of storing paper files. Moreover, if you’ve ever experience the joy of finding a receipt or some other item out of your filing cabinet, you’ll love what I’m going to show you today.
I am currently making a transition to a paperless office. My two big tools for doing it are:
Evernote
Fujitsu Scansnap s1300 Scanner
If you don’t use Evernote, I highly invite you to check it out. To call this a “notes application” wouldn’t do it justice. Evernote is basically a big digital brain, where you can drop everything from notes, documents, audio notes, photos – everything. All of it is then archived, searchable, tagged, etc. It is synced with Evernote’s servers, so you have cloud access as well as local access. If you have multiple computers, you keep it all synced easily. You can even access your data from a mobile phone or the web.

Evernote is free, and that includes up to 40MB of upload transfer to their servers per month. 40MB might not sound like a lot, but in practice, it lasts most people a month quite easily. If you do need more bandwidth, a premium account goes for $45/year. I went ahead and upgraded my account, because it makes for PDF searching (very handy in making that paperless office), higher bandwidth, as well as SSL secure transfer of your documents.
The ScanSnap s1300 scanner is a great little scanner by Fujitsu. It is small and compact and designed to be portable. In fact, you can even power this little sucker off of your USB port (although it will be slower if you do that). But, it is a pretty good quality, full duplex document scanner. I power mine off of AC power because it works faster that way.
Making The Scanner Talk To Evernote
As part of setting up the scanner on your computer, you’ll install their ScanSnap software. This software runs all the time and is activated whenever you open the lid on the scanner to scan a document. So, here’s what you need to do to get it working with Evernote:
Go into the ScanSnap preferences and, first, turn off the “Use Quick Menu” option.
Next, go to the “Application” tab. You’ll see an application dropdown. If Evernote is not listed there, simply press the “Add or Remove” button, go find the Evernote application on your hard drive and add it to the list. Then, you’ll have Evernote selected there.
Go to the “Save” tab and choose a location on your hard drive where you want raw PDF scans of your documents archived. What this does, then, is archives your documents in one place while ALSO putting them in Evernote.
What many people do is set all scans to save to an external hard drive, while also being sent to Evernote. It is complete redundancy.
The Gorgeous Part of Going Paperless
In and of itself, going digital versus going paper isn’t really a matter of time-saving when it comes to the act of filing something. It takes me about as long to file something away as it does to scan it and file it into Evernote.
The REAL convenience is in search. With Evernote and the s1300, all your PDFs are searchable. Not only that, but you can tag and describe any document however you wish. If I need to search for a particular receipt, I don’t have to wade through a pile of receipts and scan them all until I find it. Instead, I just plug a search term into Evernote and a PDF scan of my receipt pops right up. What could sometimes take up several minutes now takes a few seconds.
Making The Transition
It takes some changes to the way we do things to go paperless.
First thing I did was log into all of my bank accounts and switched to paperless statements. So, I will no longer get bank statements in the mail, but instead get PDF documents. All I have to do, then, is print the PDF document directly into Evernote (or just drag and drop it). See, Evernote sets itself up so that, instead of printing to a printer, you can print a PDF directly into Evernote. So, now I get my statements piped right into my Evernote archive without me having to print anything, scan anything, or deal with any paper.
When I get a receipt or some other thing that should be filed, I’ll now use the scanner to put it into Evernote. Then, I can either throw it away or shred it (if the information is sensitive).
Some many wonder about the legal part of this… For example, if the IRS bothers you, will documents stored digitally satisfy the requirements of documentation? Yes, it will and the IRS has actually confirmed that.
Obviously, there are some documents I wouldn’t throw away (passports, for example). Some things require original paperwork, so you’d need to hang onto that. Most things, however, won’t have that requirements and you can just scan it and shred it.
Lastly, if you have a bunch of paper files already, you’ll have to decide how to handle that as you make the transition. You can either just make a clean break and go paperless from this time forward, or you can go on a scanning spree and start converting your old files to digital.
Definitely look into this, however. I find that most people who look down on this idea are just clinging to their old ideas. People who’ve always dealt in paper have a hard time changing. But, give this a shot. The convenience is awesome.

How To Use Page Breaks In HTML

When writing documents, HTML is actually not a bad choice because you have plenty of editors to choose from and it is universally compatible. Concerning editors, you could use Seamonkey (it has an HTML editor in its suite), Kompozer or even text editors like Notepad or vi.
The issue with HTML however is that it’s not exactly clear how to make a page break. This is a completely do-able thing, and all that’s required are the use of header tags and one line of CSS in the "source" view.
CSS as most of you know means Cascading Style Sheet. You can use CSS either directly in the document or as a separate file. For simplicity’s sake I’m going to instruct how to use this directly in the document using very ‘ugly’ code, but it works.
Step 1. Input one line of code in the top of your document using "source" view
You cannot type this directly in the document because it won’t work. This code is specifically for the ‘source’ view.
The code is this:

Put this at the very top of the document.
Step 2. Use the H1 tag
H1 in HTML editors is usually labeled as "Heading 1". It’s in the same drop-down menu where it shows "Paragraph". When you highlight a block of text and change it to Heading 1, the font will be bold and large; this is normal. If you make a mistake, you can change it back to Paragraph, then select the appropriate text you want to use as Heading 1.
Any time you use Heading 1 from that point forward, a page break will happen directly before it.
Step 3. Load in web browser, print
On double-click of your file ending in .html, it will load in your web browser by default. Print from there, and the browser will obey the areas where you used H1 for page breaks.
Want a table of contents (or not waste paper)? Print to PDF
Using free PDF creator software such as PDFCreator, any document you print to a PDF file will generate its own table of contents based on your use of Heading 1. This will be shown in the left sidebar of your PDF reader of choice.
If you want to get really fancy, you can make subsections by using Heading 2, Heading 3 and so on – all the way up to Heading 6. Only Heading 1 will make a page break as you put in your code, but the others will divide into subsections. These subsections will appear as collapsible/expandable tree-style menus in your PDF reader.
When your HTML document is in PDF form, it looks and acts like it would in a word processor like Word or OpenOffice.org Writer. In a browser you don’t see page breaks even if you have them in the code, but in PDF form you do.

Use Number Keys To Jump To Specific Times In YouTube Videos

Here’s how it’s done:
1. Load up any YouTube video. You have a wide selection to choose from at our YouTube channel, pcmedianet.
2. Start video playback by specifically pressing the play button at lower left:

What this does is give the Flash Player application focus, and that’s needed for this to work.
3. When the video starts playing, number keys above the letters (meaning not the number pad) now act as time markers.
Pressing 0 (zero) will jump to the beginning of the video. 1 is 10%, 2 is 20%, 3 is 30% and goes all the way to 9 for 90%. And yes this will work whether the video is completely loaded or not.
This actually comes in handy when the Flash player decides not to recognize your clicks on the progress bar (which happens from time to time). Keystrokes always work when the player is in focus.

Search giant Google is slowly and gradually taking over the internet domain. With its multitude services available, Google is becoming an essential to have computer utility for the common users. Google has been long planning to launch its own digital book store that will have a huge archive of e-books on its platform.

Mountain View California based Search giant has recently been the target of criticism from the governments around the world because of its Google Street Cars violation of privacy. According to the industry analysts, Google has been grabbing some cryptic data that eventually violated the privacy laws and rules.

Now according to a news report released by Wall Street Journal, the internet giant much anticipated online Book store, which the company has been promoting since last summer, is set to release before the end of the year 2010. Google has named this latest online book store as Google Editions. According to the initial reports released by Google, the company’s online book store Google Editions will be having a different marked sales and business model as compared to its competitors: online store giant Amazon’s Kindle store and the Cupertino based tech giant Apple’s iBookstore.

The good thing about this latest Google online book store Google Editions is that users are not bound to purchase books through a single online book account. Google will allow them to buy these books either from Google website or from any independent bookstores anywhere on the internet. Once a book is bought, the user can tie it to any of his Google Account. This thing will enable users to read any kind of books anywhere on any portable or desktop device. Originally, this Google Edition service was supposed to launch somewhere earlier in the year 2010, but because of some reasons that didn’t happen. The company’s Manager for Strategic Development said that the launch was planned somewhere in between June and July 2010.

But a recent statement by the Google’s Product Manager indicates that everything is very much set to be launched by the end of this year and Google Editions will be available for users worldwide in the beginning of the year 2011.

The Product Manager Dougall said in a statement that because of the huge complexity of the project, Google was not planning to release it until it is in some finalized shape. Till this point, Google’s partner for the launching of Google Edition is still not clear and it is also vague what Google will offer to its publishers and independent online bookstores.

4 Troubleshooting Tips to Solve Email sending Problems

For all the business and corporate users, email is a common thing and normally these people deal with loads of email issues which sometime painstakingly take a lot of time. Normally, people confront lot of problems in the sending and receiving of emails. It has been noticed that many of the email problems can be very easily fixed and these problems normally fall under a very specific group of categories. In some instances, email problems can only be rectified from the system administrator side, but a major chunk of these problems are one that can be easily solved by the end user, by following few simple steps.

Here are some quick tips that will help you to solve email sending and receiving issues:

1. Double Check Spelling of Email Address

Well, this is the most common error that users come across or that I have confronted on a lot of occasions. So the first thing every user should do is: double check the email address. Make sure that the email address is real and there is no spell error. This particular problem is further divided into two different categories: the first is the incorrect entry of the username that is the part before “@” and the other part of this error is the entry of incorrect domain name, which is the part of email address after “@” sign.

Now when you enter an incorrect username part of the email address and that does not exist on the remote email system, then two distinct things are gonna happen. In the first instance, you will not get any kind of reply or you will get a return message stating that “the particular ‘username’ does not exist”.

Similarly, if the domain name is not real, you will get a typical message “DNS Error: Domain name not found”.

2. The Error Message from the Returning Mail

Normally, when an email message gets rejected because of some reason, a detailed error message is sent back into your email inbox that contains the technical details of the reason behind failed sending of email. Usually, majority of these returned technical messages are for technical system administrators, so they can further troubleshoot the issue. So if you get these kinds of messages, then do search for a “Core” problem as well.

Generally, these problems fall under the following categories:

Full Mailbox Error

This particular type of error message pops-up when the user to whom you are sending email, is out of disk space on the official email server. The most typical kind of message is, your mailbox is full or more precisely “Quota has been exceeded”. When this kind of error messages comes, there is nothing you can do and the best remedy is to call the recipient to free up some space by deleting previous messages.

IP on a BlockList,

This is basically an anti-spam measure but if you are not sending any kind of spam, then it means, either your computer has been compromised or you are without any prior knowledge scuffed into a spam war. These kinds of error messages are normally brimming with technical details and they become very hard to decode at some instances.

The name for these particular spam lists varies but they are commonly called as Blacklists, or blackholes. Good thing is, users can see whether their local computer IP address is on a typical blacklist or not, by visiting website like Blacklist tracer. Most of email servers usually do not use any kind of RBL (real time block). If a user is using a consumer internet service provider connection, then 80% chances are that his IP will be on one of these IP tracers of blacklist. Moreover, user can also check the IP address of the outgoing email server if he has the knowledge of it. Otherwise, user has to inform to the email system administrator to check the server.

Another thing you must ensure on your end is installing antivirus software onto your system, because if your computer gets hacked and a particular bot is running, chances are that your Computer’s IP is on that list.

3. No Particular Error message

Now coming over to another reason, if there is no error message at all and you have double checked the email address of the recipient, it means that some anti-spam requirements, implemented by mail server administer, are filtering your particular email. Unfortunately, this error is very hard to trace because you don’t get to know about the error details and you have to ultimately contact your email service provider for rectification.

4. Error still persists inspite of all Check-ups

If you have scrutinized all the possibilities and checked everything, and you are still unable to send email, then it’s time for level 2 troubleshooting. If you are on a consumer internet connection and having email sending issues, contact to their customer care service. They might request for a specimen of any electronic mail that you are attempting to dispatch together with the associated error note. Make sure that you provide them with all the stuff they require to trace and troubleshoot the problem.

Net books have always been the enviable gadgets, which gives us the ability stay connected while we are on the move. They are quite appealing and fashionable at the same time. They have grown more in popularity after the release of wireless Internet broadband through the USB ports.

The advent of 3G technology gives us the power to have full fledged wireless broadband connections on portable devices, without having to rely only on the Wi-Fi zones.

The manufacturing companies are introducing some of the most sophisticated net books to meet the requirement of every individual, be it for official purposes or for the gaming purposes.

PC tablet net books are slowly but steadily eating up into the PC market. The hype created over the release of Apple's Ipad has brought about a lot of awareness on this technology. The gadget freaks are lining up to get their hands on some of the latest devices that are being introduced into the market.

Google does not want to be left behind by either, plus their Android operating system will work as their main advantage.

Laptops and notebooks are a little on the expensive side when compared to the personal computers, but the net books are more on the cheaper side, with the price ranges starting from just $150.00.

Now Google has gone one step ahead by introducing their operating system on mobile devices other than the mobile phones. They have also introduced Android OS on the PC Tablet net books now. The devices are exceptionally good and the scopes for using the apps are plenty.

In this article, I will provide you with the information on Android powered net books, particularly the ones that are 7in and 8in.

Some of their main features are:
Web browsing with Google Chrome
Webmail services like Hotmail
PDF reader
Office file processors for word, excel and PowerPoint files
VOIP facilities to make free long distance calls
Latest games
Rotation screens to view from 4 sides
More than 25 languages and lots more

The devices use Android 1.6 operating system, and they have the DDR2 RAM with speed of 128 MB. They are available both in 7in and 8in LCD screens.

These devices have a color resolution starting from 800 * 480 depending on the models. They provide an inbuilt hard drive space of 2GB. However, all their models are also compatible with the extended memory cards, with which you can enhance the storage buy 32 more GBs.

They are Wi-fi enabled with the latest certifications for network connectivity. The microphone is built-in, and you could also watch the streaming videos on YouTube.

The battery gives you a standby time of 4 hours and the working time of 2½ hours. I feel that this is very decent for a portable device which provides so many computing abilities. The weight of the devices very upon the models, and they are usually between 300g to 600g.

If you are seeking more information on the Google Android powered net books and PC Netbook Tablets, you might want to check out the website, www.mondetech.com. They offer some excellent discount offers on some of the latest net books.

Supercomputer unravels structures in DVD materials

Eventhough the storage of films and music on a DVD is part of our digital world, the physical basis of the storage mechanism is not understood in detail. In the current issue of the leading journal Nature Materials, scientists from Jlich, Finland, and Japan provide insight into the read and write processes in a DVD. This knowledge should enable improved storage materials to be developed. (DOI: 10.1038/NMAT2931).

Storage of information is done in a DVD in the form of microscopic bits (each less than 100 nanometres in size) in a thin layer of a polycrystalline alloy containing several elements. The bits can have a disordered, amorphous or an ordered, crystalline structure. The transition between the two phases lasts only a few nanoseconds and can be triggered by a laser pulse. Common alloys for storage materials such as DVD-RAMs or Blu-ray Discs contain germanium (Ge), antimony (Sb) und tellurium (Te) and are known as GST after the initials of the elements. The most popular alloys for DVD-RW are AIST alloys, which contain small amounts of silver (Ag) and indium (In) as well as antimony (Sb) and tellurium (Te).

"Both alloy families contain antimony and tellurium and appear to have much in common, but the phase change mechanisms are quite different", explains Dr. Robert Jones of Forschungszentrum Jlich, who has collaborated with an international team on the problem. In addition to experimental data and x-ray spectra from the Japanese synchrotron SPring-8, the world's most powerful x-ray source, the team used extensive simulations on the Jlich supercomputer JUGENE. The combination of experiment and simulations has enabled the structures of both phases to be determined for the first time and allowed the development of a model to explain the rapid phase change.........
